Corn Silk derives from the stigmas of female maize plants, and is sometimes called Maize Silk or Mealie Silk (in some English speaking countries, particularly South Africa, Maize – or Sweetcorn as it is known in Britain – is known as Mielie, or Mealie).
As well as its obvious nutritional benefits, maize also offers up a range of medicinal benefits in the Corn Silk produced by the plant.
Traditionally Corn Silk is considered a diuretic and has thus been used to treat urinary tract problems, inflammation of the bladder and kidney conditions (including kidney stones).
It has also been used for prostate problems, water retention, obesity and bed-wetting, and is sometimes recommended by herbalists to relieve symptoms of PMS.
Due to its diuretic properties Corn Silk is often included in weight loss programmes for its detoxifying effect on the urinary tract and bladder; and also for its ability to help prevent bloating and water retention.
To make a tea: Use 1-2 teaspoons of Earthfare Organic Corn Silk to a cup of almost boiling water and allow to brew for 10-15 minutes before drinking.
For further information on the properties and use of Corn Silk we suggest you consult a qualified herbal or medical practitioner.
