Why do we get dry and brittle hair and nails?
Seasonal hair shedding
Historically speaking, long and luscious hair represents health and wealth, so it is understandable why we have a strong emotional connection to our hair and want to avoid hair loss as much as possible. As we transition into the colder months, there are several factors which can contribute to hair loss…
- The drop in temperature
- Less hours of light
- Natural hair cycle of growth and loss
Other possible reasons for brittle hair and nails
- Nutritional deficiencies such as zinc, iron and B vitamins
- Ageing, leading to a loss in collagen production (which is where supplementation can support)
- Physical damage from hair dye, nail polish and frequently wearing the hair up
Let’s get to the root of dull and dandruff ridden hair
Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is exactly what you need. 1 part filtered water to 1 part ACV.
- Shampoo as normal
- Leaning your head back (so that you avoid the eyes), pour the ACV mix over your entire scalp, allowing the mixture to run through the hair
- Let it sit for 1-2 minutes
- Rinse thoroughly
- Condition hair as normal
This can be done 1x per week.
The outer layer of the hair shaft, the “acid mantle,” is a slightly acidic film that is designed to maintain and protect our hair, supporting shine, making it easy to detangle, and protecting it from moisture loss. The acid mantle typically has a pH of around 4.5-5, protecting the scalp from fungal and bacterial growth, but many store bought hair products disrupt this naturally acidic pH.
ACV rinses bring us back to the optimal pH, making our hair look healthier and creating a hostile environment for fungus/bacteria that is often behind chronic scalp issues.
ACV rinses can also:
- Detangle & reduce frizz
- Decrease build up by gently exfoliating dead cells and residue
- Stimulate the scalp (thanks to vinegar promoting blood circulation)
Why Jojoba is the only oil you need for your nails…
Jojoba creates a surface barrier in the top layers of nail keratin. This helps to keep and protect the moisture and sebum that your body is naturally producing from the bottom of the nail plate up. Jojoba can be used on the nails with a hot towel to help it sink in, and can also be used for split ends (in the hair). Aim to do a mini-treatment with a hot towel every time you trim your nails or take off nail varnish.
