Baobab

Baobab

Baobab is the fruit of the Adansonia digitata, or Baobab Tree, which is native to the hot, dry savannah lands of sub-Saharan Africa.

Baobab: Latin name: (Genus) Adansonia; (Species) A. digitata.

Also known as the Monkey Bread Tree (because the fruits are edible), the Dead Rat Tree (because someone once thought the green, velvety coconut-like fruits resembled dead rats hanging from the branches!), and the Upside Down Tree (because the branches look like roots climbing to the sky), the Baobab Tree often lives for more than a thousand years.

In recent times the Baobab Fruit has earned the status of a ‘superfruit’ because of its high mineral, vitamin and antioxidant content, boasting 50% more calcium than spinach and three times more than milk.

Baobab Fruit also contains three times the Vitamin C levels of oranges, five times the potassium found in bananas and an impressively high concentration of antioxidants to boot – three times the amount found in blueberries, no less.

For the record, the Baobab Tree leaves are edible (often eaten as relish), the fruit dissolved in milk or water can be used as a drink and the seeds produce edible oil.

Never mind Baobab Fruit being regarded as a ‘superfruit’, the tree itself should be regarded as a ‘supertree’!

NOTE: Earthfare Organic Baobab Fruit Powder is harvested from the powder which naturally coats the seeds inside the fruit’s coconut-like shell – it is the produce of organically grown Baobab Fruit.

Directions for use: Blend Earthfare Organic Baobab Powder in a juice, mix into a yoghurt or cereal (oatmeal or porridge) or whizz up in a smoothie and enjoy!
